One of 350 copies. Luther Farnham (1816-1897), clergyman, journalist, librarian, wrote his pamphlet for the New England Historic Geneological Society. It was the first study of private libraries in the country -Jewett had published his study of public libraries in 1851- and would be followed by James Wynne (NewYork) in 1860 and Horatio Rogers (Providence) in 1878. Farnham mentions 82 private libraries, with 298,625 volumes and 12,000 pamphlets.
