Penultimate leaf removed, most likely an order form, [based on the 1881 edition]. Annotations concerning price and operating expenses penciled to verso of rear free endpaper. Aveling and Porter was a British agricultural engine and steam-roller manufacturer who developed a steam engine and steam roller in 1865. The company soon became the largest manufacturer of steam rollers in the world. Provenance: Sir John Gilmour, 1st Baronet of Lundin and Montrave (his bookplate) signed in plate "A. S. Leslie, 1898." Thomas Lake Aveling served on Agricultural Society committees with Gilmour. OCLC locates no copies of this edition, though an edition of 1871 is mentioned in the preface, a 1878 edition is at the State Lib. of Mass., two American editions: a third (19 pp.) at Univ. Kentucky, and a fourth (62 pp.) at Michigan, both in 1881, and a New Edition, 96 pp. in Rochester, Kent, in 1893.
