A wonderful and fascinating book containing prints of Hiroshige's woodcuts of the Fifty-three stations on the Tokaido and photographs taken approximately 80 years later, in the 1910s, of each of the stations, on opposite pages. Text in English at the top of each photograph identifying the location as well as its historical importance. More extensive text in Japanese in the outer margin of each photograph. Includes two colored maps and selections of text from great Japanese picaresque novel by Ikku Jippensha (1765-1831), "Tokaidochu Hizakurige."
