Concerning mainly Ruggles work as a public servant relating to the 1867 Paris Exposition Universelle, documents for the U.S. Mint, work for NYC, Manhattan Square Park, Columbia College Law School, and the Chamber of Commerce.

Samuel Bulkley Ruggles (1800-1881) was a lawyer, public servant, and real estate developer in New York City. He actively promoted public works such as the Croton Aqueduct system to bring water to New York City, was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1838, a Canal Commissioner from 1839 to 1842, donated the land for the creation of Gramercy Park, published many reports on public policy as a member of the city's Chamber of Commerce, represented the United States at 1867 Paris Exposition Universelle and several other international conferences, and also served as a trustee of Columbia College and the Astor Library, many of which activities from the second half of his life are represented in these documents.

2. [ALS] Nell Beckwith to Mr. Daly. [1 pp]. Bifolium. 5 x 8 inches. Paris. March 8, 1866. "I beg you to express my candid acknowledgments to Mr. Ruggles for his attention in sending me a copy of his report adopted by the Chamber of Commerce… it is comprehensive and able, like all his work…" Complains about lack of funds for the exhibition. Nell Beckwith was U.S. Consul General. Daly was most likely millionaire Marcus Daly.

4. [ALS] Nell Beckwith to Samuel Ruggles. [2 pp]. Bifolium. 5 1/4 x 8 1/4 inches. Paris. 9 May 1867. Informing Ruggles that the pavilion for weights & measures was ready, and that he needed Ruggles to supply him with some information in order to construct the stands in a uniform plan.

8. [ALS] A.P. Man to Samuel Ruggles. [1 pp]. 8 x 10 inches. New York. Oct. 2, 1879. Suggestion that Mrs. Margaretta Lorillard Ward, widow of Thomas Ward, who owns a house which is too large for her and which "appears to me would afford excellent accommodation to the Columbia College Law School."
