Francisco Ayala's first narrative fiction after the Spanish Civil War, EL echizado (The Bewitched) is the tale of a Creole man trying to meet King Charles II of Spain (who was known as the Bewitched). It was later incorporated into Los Usurpadores (in 1949), a collection on the theme of lust for power.
