Elliot C. Cowdin (1819 -1880) was a prominent businessman, owner of Elliot C. Cowdin & Company, an importing firm that specialized in silks. He was a strong Unionist and founder of the Union League Club, a prominent speaker, and active in politics. He lost his first bid for elective office to the Congress from New York, was later U.S. Commissioner to the Paris Expedition in 1867, served as a member of the New York City Chamber of Commerce, and spent time in France and Germany during the Franco-Prussian War. He was elected in 1876, to the New York State Assembly as a Republican representative of the 11th District (see Tribute of the Chamber of Commerce of the State of New-York to the memory of Elliot C. Cowdin : May 6, 1880."
