The Democrats met as the country was torn by strife, Buchanan was leaving office, Federal forts including Ft. Sumter had been seized, Texas had just become the seventh state to leave the Union, and Lincoln was 25 days away from his inauguration. After a contentious start over the seating of Tammny delegates, the convention settle to its main business, to call for reconciliation and appeasement of the south and for reunification.
