Jackson was minister-plenipotentiary of Great Britain upon the recall of David Erskine, whose resolution of the difficulty arising out of the conflict between HMS Leopard and the US frigate Chesapeake in 1807 the British government refused to ratify. Jackson was felt to be insulting to Washington and left at the start of the War of 1812.
