Special Session, March 5, 1877. Senate. Ex. Doc. No. 1. "Earliest Account of this disastrous campaign," Howes. Gillem was Commander of the Modoc Expedition during which unarmed Peace Commissioners sent by Ulysses Grant were murdered by the Modoc leader Captain Jack and his band. Gillem offers both a detailed report on the Campaign as well as a defense of his actions at the Lava Beds tragedy for which he was criticized. Both this, the official government report, and that printed earlier in 1874 at Benicia Barracks, are quite uncommon. OCLC shows only five copies of the 1874 report and five copies of this version: Yale, Univ. Arizona, Univ. Cal, Huntington, and Univ. Alberta, only one east of the Mississippi.
