Daniel Ammen (1819-1898), "naval officer, author, and inventor... served as secretary of the Isthmian Canal Commission (1872-1876) and represented the United States at the Interoceanic Canal Congress in Paris in 1879. Along with Grant, he was a proponent of building a canal across Central America.
