Filed in the Westchester County Court of Common Pleas, Henry Sherman of the Town of Harlem suing William Foshay and George Hepworth for a debt now valued at twenty-nine pounds in September 1789 by his attorney, Edward Thomas. With a detailed list of court costs and legal fees adding up to three pounds eleven shillings. Edward Thomas, surrogate of Westchester County, was a leading lawyer and had an extensive practice,between 1786 and 1806. He was the grandson of Judge John Thomas, the patriot who died a prisoner in New York, in 1777 (History of Westchester County, V.1, p. 539).
