The Churchills were a prominent Woodstock, Vermont family, and in this letter to his sister, hastily composed because he is going off to meet some Boston Ladies, E. J. Churchill, updates her briefly on family matters: "South Woodstock, 19 August, 1839. You mentioned in your letter about my coming over to Clarendon after you. I should like to do so if it was possible for me, but it is not at this time. Is it about 'lection time [x] is oblige to be away part of the time. as you know, he is something of a politician. I think you had better come home before you go to Proctorsville. Mother wants you to help her about some work for Uncle Houghton's ??? before they go away. She expected you would come home Saturday, but she will expect you to come the next stage. As for writing you a long letter it is out of the question, for I write this standing up while two Old Hags are arguing upon a piece of ribbon (the trade is like to amount to about 4 cents). No news I am trying to get on my sober face for I am invited out this eve to see some Boston Ladies. So you will see I have employment for the day to get my month in proper shape and to dress myself. I have been at a loss to know what to wear but have decided upon wearing a coat, pants, [?] boots, and on this extra occasion I think I should wear my White Hair. It is now 11 o'clock and the Stage will be along in a short time. So I must close. I think you have better come home as soon as you can. If you cannot read this, fetch it home with you and I will do it for you. [signed] EJ Churchill."
