June 29, 1849. New York Governor Hamilton Fish writes this recommendation to Hugh Maxwell, Collector of the Port of New York, on behalf of former New York Tribune Washington Correspondent, William E. Robinson. Though Robinson had recently been at the center of some breach of privilege controversy with the Tribune, editor Horace Greeley and others remained loyal to him, and Robinson was appointed to a position in the New York Custom House, and was later Congressman for the South Brooklyn District, serving three terms (See Donahoe's Magazine, Volume 27).

"The name of William E. Robinson of New York will be presented to you for a situation in the Customs House. If you are not acquainted with W. Robinson, you lose something. You will recognize him as 'Richelieu' the Washington component of the Tribune. He is a "native of Ireland & a man of letters.... If you can appoint him, I think you will have reason to be pleased with your selection ....."
