Five signed bills, pertaining to Justice Nicholas Cowenhoven.
Nicholas Covenhoven [aka Cowenhoven, Van Couvenhoven, Covenhoven] (1742-1793) was a lawyer turned Judge who was second in command of the Kings County Militia in the Battle of Brooklyn and owned over 200 acres in New Utrecht, Brooklyn, from the Van Brunt, Wyckoff, Voorhees, and Gifford families, including the Vechte–Cortelyou House.
1. To Justice Covenhoven, Esq. New York. September 14th, 1780. 8 x 3 1/4 inches. Signed by William Elsworth. For making a suite for son.
2. Receipt dated July 15th, 1782. Flatbush. 6 1/4 x 3 3/4 inche. Signed by Peter Bogart. For money recieved for various farm work including a gate, fodder, etc.
3. Bill dated July 12th, 1784. Flatbush. 8 x 4 inches. Signed Jacob Lane. For veal parts.
4. Receipt dated January 13th, 1785, Flatt Bush. 8 x 3 1/2 inches. Signed by H. Staats.
5. Bill from Cowenhoven to John Cole, covering July 11th, 1788 through June 19th, 1789. 6 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches. Hardware and farm work.
