August 24th, 1804. Receipt for 20 orders of which 16 are for rum, for customers (noted by initials) imported from Jamaica, signed by William S Smith, Inspector. The Haitian Revolution and declaration of Haitian independence in 1804 led to a shift from Haitian to Jamaican rum.

William Smith (1755-1816), surveyor of the port of New York, was a Revolutionary War soldier who, fought in the Battles of Long Island, Harlem Heights, White Plains, Trenton, and Monmouth and Newport. After serving as General John Sullivan's aide-de-camp, was transferred to George Washington's staff. In the decades following the war, Smith served as the U.S. Marshal for New York, the supervisor of revenue, and later, the surveyor of the Port of New York. Smith was one of the founders of the Society of the Cincinnati. See ANB: article.0300458
