Manuscript dated February 22nd, 1849 in a different hand and signed by Smith to an undisclosed recipient endorsing Whig Thomas B. Butler (1806-1873). Most likely a an endorement letter sent to numerous recipients.

"I think it highly important that he should be elected, not only for the sake of the future peace & harmony of the District, but also on the account of the bearing which the result will have on the great interests of the Country. Having secured to the Whig party the Executive department of the government it has now become important to place the two Houses of Congress in harmony with the Executive otherwise we can not realize the beneficial results which should flow from the great revolution of the past season. During the next Congress strenuous efforts will be made to re-establish the protective policy so important to our own State & the whole Country. You can hardly realize how much I shall be mortified by my failure to elect a Whig Member from the 4th District by reason of dissentions among our own friends. No one can doubt the fidelity of Mr. Butler to the Whig cause or has his ability to uphold and vindicate it on the floor of Congress. Some occurrences which took place during the last Session of our Legislature on the appointment of the two U.S. Senators that have I understand given offence to my friends in Litchfield County should in my judgment be over-looked & forgotten. Mr. Butler seems to be quite a favorite among a large majority of the people of Fairfield County..."

Connecticut Whig Truman Smith (1791-1884) served in the CT House of Representatives (1831-1831; 1834); the US House of Representatives (1839-1843; 1845-1849); and on the US Senate (1849-1854).
