Prominent Iowa Republican William B. Allison (1829-1908) was a member of the House of Representatives in 1862, and served as a US Senator from 1873 until his death in 1908. During his tenure, he helped secure the passing of several influential bills, including the Bland–Allison Act of 1878, the McKinley Tariff, the Dingley Act., and the Hepburn Act.
Allison's correspondence, dated January 27th, 1894, on letterhead for the Senate Chamber, is letter of decline to William Brookfield, of New York City. "I regret very much that I will not be able to come to New York on the 3rd of [February], as requested... I am so occupied here that it is not easy for me to get away. I would like very much to have the pleasure of seeing you and other friends but I fear I cannot get away at this time."
Businessman & Republican William Brookfield (1844-1903) was affiliated with numerous commercial entities, including the Sheldon Axle Company, the Greenwich Insurance Company, and the Kings County Fire Insurance Company. He served the Republican party as Chairman of various committees throughout the 1880s & 1890s.
